Pilates is a system of total body conditioning that is accessible to people of all ages and levels of fitness. Pilates was created by Joseph Pilates as a means of physical fitness and total body healing. The nine principles of the Pilates Method are breathing, concentration, control, centering, flow, precision, whole body movement, balanced muscle movement and relaxation and are integral components of each Pilates session.
These principles work synergistically to heal the body and restore a mind/body connection. Pilates exercises strengthen muscles by lengthening and toning rather than creating bulk and are performed either on mats or utilizing specialized apparatus, such as, the reformer.
